WHAT’S MOST SATISFYING ABOUT BEING A HIDDEN FENCE PROFESSIONAL?
My most satisfying moments are when I return to a job a couple of weeks after installation and training, and see the behavioural change in the dog or dogs after they have come to accept their secure containment area and are trusted by their very happy owners to be free to run, play and just be dogs. It is great to drive up a clients driveway and be met by a carefree dog standing a respectable distance from the correction zone and wagging his tail as if he knows it was me that gave him the freedom from being tied up 20 hours a day! This, and the gratitude of my clients as they thank me yet again for removing the worry of their wayward dog always has that ‘feel good, job well done’ factor.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BREED OF DOG TO TRAIN TO AN ELECTRONIC DOG FENCE CONTAINMENT SYSTEM, AND WHY?
I don’t know that I have a favorite breed, but I do tend to enjoy working with larger dogs as opposed to the smaller breeds. Having said that, all breeds have some little characteristic that can offer a challenge! I have fenced off four Huskies and all have impressed me with their intelligence. The Hungarian Vizslas are very intelligent dogs and quick to learn, whilst the terriers are always a challenge with their act first think afterwards attitude.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HIDDEN FENCE DOG CONTAINMENT SYSTEM TO USE IN THE FIELD, AND WHY?
This has to be the PT4 coupled with a R9 collar. The PT4 because it is a complete package with lots of options, the power pack is a good selling point, and I find it easy to use. The R9 because of its two year battery life, and above all the PT4 optimum system comes with a life time warranty.
DO YOU HAVE A GOOD STORY TO SHARE ABOUT CONTAINING A CUSTOMERS PET?
Every job holds a story, such as the first system I installed – a big Rottweiler named Bruce and on his farmer neighbours death list – ‘next time there won’t be a next time’ type of thing! A days work and Bruce was contained on his own side of the fence, all anxiety removed from a very relieved dog owner. A couple of years later and Bruce still sits on his side of the fence probably thinking horrible thoughts about his farmer neighbour!
WHAT’S THE HARDEST INSTALL YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED?
I guess a job I did just prior to having a hip replacement would be right up there. I was called out to contain a couple of dogs on a west coast beach property. The whole property is covered by bush and very wind bent, dense, tee-tree, contour very hilly. At one point there is a very steep, deep, rock sided gully. This water- worn ravine has sides at about 50 degrees and is about 10 meters deep. As I stood at the top of this ravine, (I might add, in considerable pain from my dodgy hip), I’m thinking to myself ‘ I’ve got to get my loop wire down to the bottom of this, then up the other side’. Long story short, after fighting my way around 450meters of the above, I’m thinking never again. One should never say never again, because a couple of months later my very happy clients asked me to come back and extend the contained area by another 200 meters and I still had that dodgy hip!
